Portugal 'offering different environment to Spain'

In property investment advice that may help those looking to serve the tastes of those who like something culturally different, it has been suggested that the lack of Anglicisation of Portugal is part of its appeal.

John Reilly, managing director of overseas property firm Buy Abroad said that those looking for property in Portugal were seeking something which differed from neighbouring Spain, where he said large parts have taken on a distinctly English character.

He said: "People are looking for a country that offers a mix of traditional things like tavernas rather than fish and chips and English pubs."

However, Mr Reilly said, the suggestion that the Algarve was specifically more upmarket was not quite true, with the reality being that higher prices ensured it was more affluent investors who went there.

TV programme A Place in the Sun has listed Portugal as the third best place in Europe to invest, with an average return on an investment of 360 per cent.
